GE03 - Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Now we take it one stage further and having created the hydrogen from electricity, we use the hydrogen to generate electrical power.

Another tank but this time we are only capturing the hydrogen which is held in a section of the tank under the water. You can see the cathodes at the bottom of the tank and the anodes on the side. The amount of hydrogen we are creating here is more than the last tank. We have a higher voltage and with more electrodes we get a higher current and more gases being created.

On the side of the tank we have a very clever device called a fuel cell. This is two plates of a specific material and when we pass hydrogen across the plates is changing the position of the electrons in the plates – and this gives us electrical power. To get this power we need to open the tap at the back of the tank, but the problem is that it uses the hydrogen up quicker than we can create it even though the front tap is set to only allow a small amount of hydrogen over the plates.

From the meter we can workout the total electrical power we are getting from the cell, here it’s very small but bigger ones are used in cars for example, to allow them to be powered by hydrogen.
